Game Schooling

Can we talk about how awesome games are? We have found boardgames to be an extremely beneficial unschooling tool. It is always so nice to walk up on the kiddos as they are engrossed in strategy and fun.
.
While playing boardgames, our kids have to figure out the rules, discover strategy, and navigate team work and negotiations. They practice math and learn about money when playing Monopoly. They stretch their vocabulary and spelling by playing Scrabble. They develop strategies by playing chess, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride. And all of this helps build confidence, competence, and comradery.
.
All of this is taking place with no direction or control from us. This is intentional self-directed play, and incidentally they are learning and growing. Some might call it games-schooling.
.
There are so many benefits of learning through play. Playing games is fun, and people learn best when their motivation is intrinsic rather than externally imposed. So playing games can tap into that sweet spot where the learner is experiencing joy and having fun.
.
Joyful learning is not easily forgotten. When learning is coupled with a feeling of joy and satisfaction it is much more likely to be retained by the learner.
.
So bring on the boardgames! What are some of your favorites?
