“You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of shore.”
Christopher Columbus
Before we could commit to unschooling our kids, we had to count the cost as a family. We knew there would be risks involved.
.
Making such a huge paradigm shift is no easy task. We knew there would be so much we needed to unlearn. We would have to redefine learning and redefine success. We would have to fully commit, be all in, and invest the time and effort. We would have to release control, and allow our kids to self-direct their learning. And within the old paradigm, that’s scary.
.
We were scared. Afraid of failing, afraid of neglecting our kids. There would be no institutional system to blame for failure. There would be no one directing us on what to do next. We could learn from others who have gone before, but it would mostly be a pioneering endeavor.
.
We counted the cost and determined it was worth it. Freedom, after all, is a risk. We had to lose sight of the shore, all that was comfortable and secure, and have the courage to embrace the unknown. It’s been a difficult and painful journey at times. The seas can be unforgiving. But freedom and love reigns aboard our ship, and we won’t turn back.
