Learning Styles

Growing up I knew I learned differently than the ways in which I was being taught and evaluated.
.
I knew that the grades I “earned” on my tests were not reflective of what I knew.
.
I was a slow processor and taking tests took me so long that by the time the allotted test time was up, I would have to quickly fill in as much as I could just to make it look like I had at least completed it.
.
However, when given a chance to speak freely or to show physically what I knew or rather could do, then I would thrive and stand out. This is because I am a kinesthetic learner that flourishes through doing and participating rather than through lecture or books and tests.
.
My learning differences showed up immensely as an elite strategic athlete and then even more so in university as tests were still a struggle but practicums, internships, and jobs were a breeze.
.
Have you ever thought about why so many athletes are deemed “meatheads” or is it possible that the majority are simply spectacular at learning in the way they were wired to learn and it just might not be through lecture, books, or tests?

The challenges I overcame have helped encourage our children’s pursuit of passion and lifelong learning.

My experience with traditional institutional education is one of the many reasons we began seeking a new route for our own children’s learning atmosphere. The challenges I overcame have helped encourage our children’s pursuit of passion and lifelong learning.

What type of learner have you discovered you are, and how best do you learn? Your experience may help others to also identify their strengths too!
