All Children Are Clever

“All children are clever.” – A common saying among aboriginal people in Southeast Asia.
.
Several of our kids are severely dyslexic (they tend to read and write backwards and upside-down for example).
.
But unschooling kids with learning disabilities can be a wonderful experience. In a family where learning is child-led, there are endless opportunities to learn in ways that are joyful and fun.
.
When learning is forced or controlled, it can cause anxiety, stress, confusion, and embarrassment which only intensifies the disability.
.
Instead of forcing them to “do school” we allow them the freedom to play, learn, and grow at their own pace and in their own way.
.
Learning will happen organically as we simply do life. However, there is a responsibility on the parent or guide to cultivate an environment conducive for free learning. This requires intentionality on our part.
.
One way we are intentional about helping our kids unpack and process what they’re learning is by asking good questions. We want to discuss with them what they’re doing and what they’re learning. Spending time in conversation is probably overall the most important parental “action” involved in unschooling.
